UPDATE: FCSO Identifies Deputy Involved in May 12 Officer-Involved Shooting

Frederick, Md. (May 13, 2025)—The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) is identifying the deputy involved in the officer-involved shooting that occurred on Monday, May 12, 2025, in the 300 block of North Market Street in Frederick.


The deputy has been identified as Corporal Gregory Morton, a 14-year veteran of the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office.


In accordance with agency policy, Cpl. Morton has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

 

FCSO Officer-Involved Shooting Under Investigation


Frederick, Md. (May 12, 2025)—At approximately 6:44 p.m., a Frederick County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) deputy was flagged down in the 300 block of North Market Street in Frederick regarding an individual experiencing a mental health crisis in the parking lot adjacent to Old Towne Tavern.

 

The subject approached the deputy with a knife. After multiple warnings to drop the weapon, the individual refused to comply. The deputy then fired one shot, striking the individual. A knife was recovered at the scene. Deputies immediately rendered aid, and the individual was treated on scene by EMS. He was then transported to an area trauma center and is currently reported to be in stable condition.

 

The deputy was not injured during the incident.

 

The Frederick Police Department will be handling the criminal investigation into the incident. The Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General was contacted and declined to respond.

 

There is no ongoing threat to the community.
